How much did the pirate pay to get his ears pierced? Oh, pieces of hate. I don't know. No, no, no, it was cheaper than that. The dude paid a buck an ear. Wow, he paid a buck an ear. I don't know if that is cheaper. Well, I mean, it depends how much the buck an ear charged him, right?
Probably didn't charge him anything. He just poked him with his sword. Well, I mean, we learned from hook. They do it with like a very blunt hook. Very, very blunt hook. Like a rounded hook. This is going to hurt a lot. Because I'm essentially bludgeoning your ear with a club. I'm just going to poke it with like a blunt object until your skin gives away and you have a hole in your ear. Whoa. Okay, I've got one more. So what is a pirate's favorite letter of the alphabet? Well, I mean, it can't be R. Well, you'd think it's R, but that's where you'd be wrong because everyone knows that a pirate's first love has always been the C. Oh, that's true. Yeah, the C. He loves the C. That's his favorite letter. Wow. Oh, pirates are so cool, dude. Oh, man. Why do I have pirates on the brain? It's like I've been watching nonstop pirate movies and TV shows and reading pirate books all week. Oh, my gosh.
Oh, man. What are we doing? Why are we talking about pirates? Why do I have pirate jokes on the mind? Hello, and welcome to The Popcorn Isn't Real. I'm Leif Ehrich. I'm here with my co-host, Torvald. Today, we're going to be talking about Star Wars Skeleton Crew and its relation to other pirate works of fiction. whoa okay skeleton crew we're talking about disney's latest offering into the star wars universe i felt like it just kind of came out of nowhere and suddenly it was like whoa new disney show and whoa it's really good well no it was kind of like i know another show is coming out and i know it's called skeleton crew but i know nothing about it like nothing at all like jude law i had no intention of knowing anything about it i i didn't even look into it Oh, yeah, because the last show was like, what, Ahsoka? It wasn't that good. Or Book of Boa Fett or something crappy. I currently feel all of a sudden that under Disney,
out of nowhere, we are suddenly in the midst of like a golden age of Star Wars. Like between skeleton crew coming out and being the bomb, just being awesome and fun, and Star Wars Outlaws coming out and being like the greatest game ever made, just open world Star Wars and you're just like a smuggler girl this is awesome like I mean those two things alone are everything I've wanted from Star Wars since I was old enough to talk like yeah a game where you can just be in the Star Wars universe and a TV show about kids in the Star Wars universe like oh my goodness like that's so good and it's crazy that all that suddenly after years and years of neglect of absolute torture by the Disney Corporation. The Book of Boba Fett, awful. Season 3 of Mandalorian, awful. Ahsoka, probably awful. I didn't even see it. I mean, most of this stuff was just like a slog. Solo, pretty bad. Star Wars Episode 9, unbelievably awful.
You might say that Jabba himself is kind of like a slog. Wow, yeah, dude. I think you mean slug. Oh, you're right. He is kind of like a slog in that if you change one letter. He's actually like a slug. Well, how do you feel about Skeleton Crew? I'll admit there are things that you could criticize about it, but do you like it? I like it, clearly. Yeah. I mean, did you? No, I love it. I love it. There are lots of things you can criticize about it. But overall, I mean, it's not trying to be, you know, amazing. It's just trying to be fun. And that's all it is. It's just really fun. And it's just a fun adventure, like just a classic adventure, like the most classic adventure you can think of, you know, like written in the 1800s by, like, say, a famous author like Robert Louis Stevenson or perhaps Louis. I don't know how you'd say that. Oh, wait a minute. Sounds like you're referencing a particular novel that you think that this TV show may have sort of been based on, lovingly based on.
The theory today was that we were going to look at elements of Skeleton Crew and see how it was inspired heavily by Treasure Island, and I think perhaps even more heavily by Treasure Planet, the Disney film. Oh, interesting. Okay, well, Treasure Planet was just Treasure Island in space. Literally, I'm not being facetious. So it could just be they did Treasure Island in space, And it just so happened that a lot of things are similar to what Disney, who also owns them, did two decades ago. Treasure Island, of course, you know, it's like 200 years old. It's out of copyright, right? Anyone can anyone can use it. So even if you make your own Treasure Island, it's not plagiarism anymore. It's free to use. It's public domain. Everyone should use it. There's been many adaptations of Treasure Island over the past two centuries. But the, in my opinion, the well-known ones, the mainstream ones, the ones that people actually have watched or seen or, you know, interacted with are all already owned by Disney.
There was Disney's Treasure Island from 1950, I think, which is probably like the most famous pirate movie ever that like essentially started the whole pirate race. The most classic, even though no one living has seen it, but yes. No, but anyway. Well, George Lucas definitely saw it. He definitely saw it. I mean, well, no, anyone George Lucas' age saw it. Right, no, people alive have seen it. They're just like 80. Yeah, exactly. They're like old people. Like, do they even watch movies anymore? Then there is like Muppet Treasure Island, also owned by Disney, also very classic. I don't know. Christine likes Muppet Treasure Island. I don't think it's very good. But, you know, I love the Muppets and none of their movies are that good. That's what I was going to say. It's very representative of Muppet stuff. It's actually, honestly, I think one of the, I don't know. I don't know if it's one of the better Muppet movies, but it's one of the higher production
value Muppet movies, I think. Disney already owns all of the current mainstream adaptations of Treasure Island. So technically, they could reuse anything they want from any of the current Treasure Island, you know, material. I've read Treasure Planet. I've watched Disney's Treasure Planet. i've watched muppet treasure planet i watched treasure planet planet i've read treasure island i keep doing that too treasure island i watched muppet treasure island i did watch treasure planet as well um i have uh compiled what i consider to be the hallmarks of a treasure island story because every treasure island adaptation is a little different but they all have certain things in common and in my opinion if you are reading a story or watching a story and it's got more than half of these hallmarks of a treasure island story then you're watching treasure island that's my opinion we are going to be looking at skeleton crew and it's an amazing show
i have only seen each episode two times sometimes three so and they definitely deserve to be watched more times than that so yeah such a good show oh man so there are probably some things i'm missing like references to pirate movies and so there's lots in there so feel free to comment to us on on youtube or or send us oh yeah yeah there are similarities with pirate movies that you think we missed well what i'd also love to hear is if anybody knows any like uh hidden star wars connections because i know that they're there i know that there's like little easter eggs and hidden connections yeah there's like uh exactly especially to like stuff in legends i would love to hear so if you know any of that that we don't talk about please comment it i want to i want to learn i know port borgo was first referenced in a west end role-playing game i think probably whoa but that's where all the star wars like that that's where everything came from yeah that's
where all the expanded universe came from yeah well zon the father of the expanded universe dude you talked to him yeah sure did who knows when that episode will come out it's really long as we said we both love skeleton crew it's amazing and everyone should watch it it's also got a lot of things that you could criticize about it and we're probably going to criticize some things about it in my opinion that's how star wars is supposed to be because re-watch the original trilogy there's a lot of things you could criticize about them and the star wars fans do criticize like that's the that is a hallmark of star wars fandom is criticizing everything about star wars right but you love it anyway because it's awesome and it's amazing and it's fun one of the only reasons i know about the original 1950s movie treasure island is because on the old star wars vhs's they came with three h vhs's and a fourth one that was the making of star wars
feature yeah that's a good one during one of the interviews with with mark hamill um he referenced treasure island and i think it might have even shown a clip from the old movie i'm not sure about that but anyway he referenced treasure island and kind of the old movie and he said it's like a young boy going out on adventure like jack hawkins and i always thought jack hawkins because i had read treasure island at that point i read at a pretty young age i was like it's jim hawkins dude what the anyway well so in my opinion there are a few hallmarks of a treasure island story the number one thing that's got to have it's got to start with is a pirate captain has buried treasure on a hidden island and i'm not sure if that necessarily matches up with skeleton crew but what is there anything there pirate captain tack renod essentially yeah owns this planet i i don't know what happened to him but like this was his planet he could come and go as he pleased and
there's so much treasure and it's buried in the centroid of the mechanism oh you're right it is buried in the centroid of the mechanism it's deep inside this planet of just moving interlocking parts and elevators and and cg money that falls down in a waterfall you're like cg money why did they have to use cg money why is jude law like play with cg like they could have used real money what's going on in that scene i couldn't the show is so good but yeah when when uh jude law's character finds the money and like just taps it and then like a waterfall comes down i just like you could have just poured real gold coins i can't be that expensive well you just plastic gold plastic coins right like not real gold yeah no exactly i just mean like gold color talking about they are literally that expensive wow he could have just used real gold coins come on i got that disney money why is it on gold like it looks so bad anyway so the treasure was already
buried tack renaud kept it there because he could just go and get it whenever he buried his ship there essentially and his ship was sort of the key or i guess well and this is my next question actually is that typically the next thing that happens in a treasure island story is a kid gets a map to treasure island from an old dying pirate and then goes looking for treasure usually amid a pirate attack on his mom's inn but not always so i guess what you're sort of gonna map that to is the ship that uh that got left on at aton because the ship kind of is it's it's not the map but it's what gives you access to at aton right so it's sort of right well the ship contains the map more or less it contains sm33 whoa i love sm33 oh man dude let's talk about sm33 for a minute yeah i think in my opinion best character of the show yeah absolutely he's great everyone's he's awesome like he just he steals the show i they i don't think they thought he was going to be
as popular because like they announced several black series action figures and sm33 isn't one of them yeah i only want i'm assuming they will make the only one i want is he like an old imperial battle droid because he looks like the imperial style battle droids like the one that was in um rogue one k2so yeah yeah but not completely like that but he's definitely not like a clone war era battle droid yeah um so so tack renaud must have done this during the galactic civil war or shortly before during the empire days it's implied that he was visiting at and before at and like completely lost contact with everybody right yeah i mean well it seems like yeah it was kind of always a secret even in probably the old republic days well because nobody because everyone forgot about it because probably the only one who knew about it during the empire days was was the palpatine and he died so yeah so you think sm33 is like a modified battle droid that's the
implication is that he's one of those battle droids but he's a pirate droid so he has a peg leg he's missing an eye um and he's he's got a over-the-top pirate accent he's so pirate yeah he's such a pirate i mean i hear my feelings about sm33 first of all he is awesome but second of all i think it's too bad they started out making him so badass like storming that pirate port saving all the kids you know fighting all the pirates at once and then every time he does anything after that he's like downgraded to like the dick hollaran of the show like all he ever does after that is get like axed in the back and fall down yeah i just like that doesn't make much sense to me why is this model of droid so easy to turn off yeah like there's just a button design like that's why they don't make them anymore that's why they only made one he was like a prototype and they're like no this doesn't work bad turn them off yeah give that to some pirates i've got one small
theory about sm33 so you know that mouse that lives in his eye um i felt like in the last episode or second to the last episode i can't remember but when jod yeah slices his head off and then i felt like they filmed it with him stomping that mouse and then they like cg'd his foot like kicking it out of the way oh no the mouse survived they did because like the tone of that episode is like Jod is bad like yeah before it was like he was sort of a great character we don't know now he's bad but like cartoonishly bad like he is the most generic villain you could ever think of and yeah he definitely stomped on that rat I felt like that's what they did and I think there's like that exact scene in uh the frog princess I think that right yeah bad guy does that he stomps on that bug and like the exact same shot but anyway whatever yeah well except somehow the bug like isn't squished after it gets stepped on like that just that ruined the movie for me like
you step on a bug it doesn't you wanted that dead bug well it doesn't get any last words if you step on a bug that's not how it works it's squashed like what did he do just lightly crush it a tiny bit and then walk away like why would it's exoskeleton preserved it no okay so we've got a kid getting i guess a way to get to attatan a way to get to treasure treasure island which in this is treasure planet in this one no i do want to say i don't think uh structurally speaking i don't think skeleton crew necessarily maps no it doesn't follow one to one with but i think It has some of the hallmarks, right? Yeah. Here's one that I couldn't find any connection to for Skeleton Crew. So I'm just interested to know if you've got one. In basically every single Treasure Island reimagining that I've seen, somebody gets a black spot, usually served by a blind pirate named Pew. Now, caveat, that does not happen in Treasure Planet.
So that could be an easy out here. Yeah. But is there anything akin to that in Skeleton Crew? Does someone get a black spot? Is there a blind pirate? So, I mean, the black spot certainly is a literary hallmark of this story. Is it totally necessary to this story? Not at all. The first, like, five, six chapters of that book, you could just take out. In fact, if you watch even the 1950s, the most boring version, they just go through the first five chapters in, like, a minute. in like two seconds yeah it's like billy bones is already there he's already dying he gets the the spotlight well i can't even believe they had uh whatever his name is black dog black dog yeah black dog come in first and then blind pew within 30 seconds yes usually black dog gets cut and you just do blind pew because why do you need black dog i even took a note on this i actually think the disney movie uh the 1950s movie made more sense than the novel in that respect because why
would black dog the pirate find billy bones leave and then send blind pew back like months later just to give him the black mark and then leave and leave and then come back later with the entire crew to get him and they like just give him time way earlier than 10 o'clock at night yeah yeah they came right away no it makes so much more sense in the movie because then it It actually feels like Black Dog and Pew are there as like scouts just looking for Billy Bones. They find him, they go get the crew, and they come straight back, right? But it's kind of funny that they apparently sent out a blind scout. But hey, he did the job, right? It worked. But it still made way more sense than the book. Clearly, they wanted him to die. They were just like, let's get this blind guy out of here. There were actually a lot of ways. Here's what it is. silver long john silver is an equal opportunity employer because he's disabled himself
and so this blind guy he's like you know what i'm gonna give him a job you could be my scout i will say in the muppet treasure island blind pew is nuts he's crazy he's like whoa he's like a force to be reckoned with blind pew was uh he was terrifying and insane and in so yeah there's no black spot i guess in no and there's no billy bones you know you sort of at least have a little bit of this in the very first scene with like the pirates kind of turning on jod not wood jod not not wood i hate his name i hate his name dude another theme of this movie is like repeated syllables like ad adan not not wood can't say i remember no ad adan no i can't say i remember that either i do remember it but i can't say i remember it good old dried another important feature of a treasure island story there is always a one-legged pirate named long john silver or something similar like usually like a name with a color or something
and usually someone says to beware of him but he turns out to be likable and kind yeah at first well yeah and in skeleton crew have anyone there's one character who everyone literally everyone says to beware of everyone they meet everyone everyone they meet is like whoa if you don't trust one guy it's that guy don't trust him he's got a lot of names he's got a lot of names but one of them is jod and one of them is silvo jod silvo long john silvo i mean that's very obvious he is clearly long john silver just from that alone no definitely no he's he's clearly long john silver the only thing is he's not missing a leg but that would have been a little on the nose well and sm33 is missing a leg so yeah there you go he's missing a leg so we're good he's also like kind of a cyborg so if it's the treasure planet no he's not a cyborg despite all our expectations and what you might have thought they wanted jod to be a hundred percent hardcore villain at the end
yeah i don't know why but which is weird it's yeah it seems a little odd but i learned from watching the original 1950 treasure island that when it's not in book form and you can actually see long john silver he is not threatening at all because he's a disabled man he can't run he can't walk lovable guy he doesn't have like a peg leg he has a crutch so he can only use one arm and his gun only has one shot because it's like a musket exactly like one shot he's no longer a threat so like in my opinion that's kind of a cool thing about long john silver yeah he's a sweet talker the book is he has he's really really charismatic he knows how to talk to people he has a long silver tongue a long john silver no um well and this is another hallmark is that the evil pirate long john silver tends to pretend to be a good guy to get on the voyage waiting until the right moment to stage a mutiny yeah jod i feel like maybe wasn't as adept at this
as Long John Silvo is. No, John doesn't seem to be much of a sweet talker. No, no, but he is nice to the kids at least for some episodes. Some people have said that in the opening scene where Captain Silvo and his crew bust in and steal the New Republic, whatever it was. First of all, that's a great scene and it's an amazing reference to the Tantive IV when Vader invades in A New Hope. I don't know if they were trying to keep the fact that he is that captain a secret. Yeah, I don't know. I wasn't sure. Because obviously it's Jude Law. The moment he speaks, you're like, oh, that's Jude Law. But anyway, some have said that his helmet that he wears is kind of funky looking when he's Captain Silvo. Looks like a tricorn hat. A pirate hat. Oh, yeah. Whoa. It's like a pirate hat. Hey, yeah, I can get down with that. Typically, Long John Silver has to bond with the main character kid in some way along the
course of the journey. I don't think Jod did very much bonding with them, but he did talk to them a bit. So you're right. I don't think he bonded with the kids very much. I do think that he gets a moment with each of the kids. He has one moment with Fern. He gets one little moment with Neil. He gets like a little bit with KB. And then he has a couple with Wim. Even if he isn't a sweet talker, they do all grow to trust him before he turns crazy evil. Yeah, very much so. They're pretty stupid kids. Not their fault. They grew up on a very, very happy planet and they're just kids. Long John Silver bonding with Jim Hawkins is something that happens in the book and all the movies, kind of. But what I think makes Treasure Planet the best of all the adaptations, better than even Skeleton Crew, as much as I love it, is because they focus on that relationship. And they tie it in to his abandonment issues with his dad.
To his dad being gone, yeah. And that Long John Silver is the best Long John Silver, despite how hideously ugly he is. Yeah, he's like really ugly. He's like really, his face is like munched. Just grotesque. He's so weird looking. strange like dog cat man but i mean his cybernetics are awesome i do love that yeah he's awesome i mean like he sacrifices the treasure to save jim at the end like that's a powerful moment it's the climax and it's silvers like i think they realized that really the most compelling and interesting character in the book is silver himself because like i think everyone knows that yeah i mean even i to some extent i think the author of the original novel knew that but maybe not to the extent we know now right he i think he knew he had something special in the silver character in most other adaptations of treasure island long john silver is still an interesting character but he is played much more as a villain oh definitely you feel like he probably only bonded
with jim maybe to manipulate them like maybe there's a little bit of feeling there because he does save him to me that's what makes treasure island as a story an amazing story yeah because jim the main character loves captain silver right he loves long john silver he's like really really best friends with him they're they've bonded together in a way where it's like a father-son kind of relationship and yet long john silver is the bad guy he's the main antagonist yeah and that's what makes it such a cool so much more interesting and then the best part is in the good adaptations long john silver also loves jim like he also really cares for jim And that makes his position as the bad guy, you know, even in his own eyes, kind of precarious. And, you know, he has to work his way through it. And like you said, they really embrace that in Treasure Planet more than in any other adaptation, which is why it's the best in Treasure Planet.
He's got abandonment issues because his dad left in every other adaptation. His dad's just dead. He just died. Well, I know. And it's so weird in the book. His dad dies in like a line in the middle of a massive paragraph. like yeah his dad had never showed up before and then he's like and my dad we have no idea how jim even feels about it like he says like i guess we were sad maybe in one sentence but like and it happens amidst other important things happening and so it's like no one even cared like you could just miss that he had a dad and he died like it's just so odd that this would be in the story and not feed into the emotional arc into his relationship with silver right and it's it blows my mind that no one saw that connection of this kid no longer has a dad he needs a dad long john silver is basically his dad no one saw that until treasure planet it's crazy but i do actually have
to give props to the 1950s treasure island movie i felt like it improved on the book in many many ways uh and one of those ways was in the uh long john silver character and particularly his relationship with jim the actor they got to portray him the great robert newton uh he is actually credited with having created the well accepted pirate accent of the yarr matey yarr you be walking the plank if i have anything to say about it you know he he created that there was no pirate accent before he did treasure island and it wasn't like he set out to make the pirate accent that was just his accent that's just not even like that exaggerated as we come to expect now he did exaggerate it a bit for the you know just to just to give his character a little extra character um but it wasn't like you know i'm gonna make the pirate accent it was just him talking with his you know native somerset accent the interesting thing there is it as it turns out
coincidentally enough that accent probably is pretty similar to the accent that many pirates may have had back in the day because a lot of pirates came from small like port towns just like out in the boonies um like blackbeard for example i think he came from bristol which is near uh the area of somerset um so blackbeard probably did sound a lot like uh long john silver in the 1950s maybe long john silver in this he's got the voice he's got the attitude you know he's subtly but overtly manipulating everybody and everything around him all the time like when jim and the uh the financiers come into his tavern, he announces them immediately. He's like, Oh, hello, Mr. Jimbo and Squire, Torlani. You know, like he announces them out loud to his pirate friends so that everyone can be aware that they're here, you know, but he does it as if he's just being extra friendly and welcoming. Right. Yeah.
He's so good. I love the part where black dog shows up in that tavern. Cause that's where all the pirates hang out. Cause that's where they live. That's their party place. It's a pirate place. I love that. first of all that silver himself can't chase after this guy because he's no he can't do literally can't he's just a poor disabled guy around and then jim runs after him and he shouts get him and the pirates run out and he's like no get black dog and his pirate friends are like well why that's our money shouldn't we grab the the kid we don't like that he's just probably because he's so smart and his friends are so dumb he's probably just like you idiots don't you the plan come on first of all black dog just comes in here tries to ruin everything and now you guys are catching jim yeah and now you guys are also ruining everything no silver's a really cool character and he really holds up like you know even in modern stuff you introduce a silver long
john silver type of character to any story and he's going to be a lot of fun like he's just a very strong character basically working off of his charisma instead of off of his uh you know physical abilities and being a bad guy will pretend to be a good guy but but what i think makes him work best is that you know you know he's evil right you know you know he's the bad guy from the instant he shows up in the book this is one of the first things like the one-legged man yeah one of the most famous quotes from treasure island is you look out for the one-legged man yes and even then knowing that he's evil he still wins you over like he's so great and charismatic and just an awesome fun timeless character and you know he's just such a lovable lowlife i don't know charismatic scoundrel so i read this book when i was very young i read like uh it was an abridged version but it had all the all the same plot points because there's so much
in this book that you don't need the best version of the book yeah you made a good choice there i don't see how anyone ever got through this movie or book rooting for the other guys jim well i mean jim is fine he's a kid but like i just you root for silver like he's so smart and who wrote for captain smollett and trelawney and the doctor they're all so unlikable and mean they're just boring they're just guys you know just like stuck up british dudes exactly yeah i don't know but honestly i think this is the only way to have like a a likable character that betrays you in the end of the in the end of the book or the movie is to tell you right off the bat this is the bad guy yeah right if you tell the audience you don't like this guy and then proceed to have him be the most likable guy ever yeah then you don't feel as bad when he turns evil at the end because we're still rooting for him anyway like we're like hey screw you you don't
want us to like this guy we like him right that's how you feel and i felt like jod na na wood didn't quite have to write in a few ways like i feel like yeah he comes a little short as a long john silver character but to their credit literally everyone they meet do say this man is going to betray you like they're not subtle about it he is he is charismatic and likeable because he's freaking jude law and you know jude law right i do think that actual long john silver when he went to like the the hotel planet could have gotten their room upgrade without a bribe yeah just by talking i know i know he and same with like i felt like they played him as too inept in in in skeleton crew i think well i mean he just he just gives their money that's all he ever does is bribe people like even with the yopies on the the at akron planet he acts like oh i just talked to them and got your opies back which is a really weird scene actually that whole thing is kind of odd
it is it's so weird that it doesn't show what happened but apparently he bribed them i guess i don't know it never showed in the 1950s movie there's a lot more bonding between long john silver and jim and right after that scene with black dog that you were describing when he goes into the tavern um when they chase him out long john silver shows a lot of care to jim he's like oh you come with me if there's gonna be pirates around then you best be knowing how to protect this gun he gives him a freaking gun he's like take my gun and have it on you all the time it's like a silver engraved gun and he just gives it to jim and i'm like this is cool like first of all it paints him as like a little more piratey where the first thing he thinks of is have a gun and also you know it shows that he cares about jim and it shows that jim has reason to like really truly believe that silver cares about him right like long time someone just gave him a
freaking pistol but then i loved that in the end of the movie and completely added like this wasn't in the book in the end of the movie he pulls that gun off of jim and uses it to escape like he planted that gun there at the beginning of the movie so that he could use it at the end to get away with the treasure. I was like, oh my gosh, he's so smart. He's like 20 steps ahead of everyone, even the viewers. That's why on the ship when they're like, no guns, and they confiscate everyone's guns, he's like, now, Jim, you best keep that hidden away. I wouldn't want anyone thinking I gave you a gun. Don't tell anyone. He's like, I might need to pull that out and threaten someone. He's so smart. He's like the Boba Fett of Treasure Island. He's always putting random. five steps ahead of everyone planting random bombs this is only for our listeners only the boba fett from the non-canon bounty hunter wars oh yeah from legends yeah yeah you know the canon
boba fett the book of boba fett he's like 20 000 steps behind everyone all the time he's like constantly falling to the head running backwards now another cool interaction i felt like that they added to that movie which was not in the book was um uh long john silver had to he convinced jim to secretly go and get rum that he could use for cooking yeah and then he used that run i thought that was really cool and kill arrow i thought that was so cool too because first of all it's bonding them together with like a little sneaky plan you know it's completely you know innocent on the surface yeah but he's actually using it to commit freaking murder and implicating jim in it and i'm like oh my goodness like silver you oh you're a crafty devil you it's like yeah it's beautiful too because how it shows how different he is from his dumb pirate friends because like the what's they're just like let's kill him mr mary is just like i want to stab him just like cartoonishly
going after him with a big knife and he's like dude i killed him by just give just putting a drink near him i didn't even like telling him putting it near him arrow's like a total loser in the books and movies but in treasure planet arrow is like tip top like he's like on the ball i will admit he does fly into a black hole like mr arrow i think he's a good guy i just for something about him rubs me the wrong way like his character design he's like the way he like well first of all though i know it's his job to defend the captain but the way he yells at delbert and he's like a white knight that's why i don't like it he's like i would have harsh words about my captain um that's like the first mate's job right no no no no sure sure that's fine but i'm just like they kind of needed to vent because they had done nothing delbert financed this mission he's paying captain amelia and she just comes on and insults him to his face like 10 times
she says nothing other than insults i'm just like do you chill out i know like you can talk to him about how you don't like the crew he hired but anyway one other reason that jod silvo from skeleton crew is like long john silver is the very first thing that long john silver generally does for jim is he cooks him a meal what's the very first thing that jod does when he gets onto the onyx cinder uh he levitates a key and uses that no no that's in port borgo when he gets onto the onyx gender um he he goes back to get the droid yeah well that's true but once they get away from port borgo he makes them a meal he he makes them i do even remember that yeah and they all just like gobble it up that's the first thing he does that's what long john silver made in treasure planet actually his name is long john silver in that his name is just silver i think silver yeah they never say long john no it's just silver no yeah but no yeah you're right
And so, like, I just feel like that's 100% intentional. Like, they're like, oh, he's John Silvo and he's a cook. He feeds the kids. Well, yeah, definitely. No, I didn't even catch that one. That's really good. Yeah, why else would they have had him make food for them? Eating is not typically something that even happens in Star Wars unless it's Luke doing it. Luke is like the only character in the entire show that ever eats anything. He drinks blue milk and he eats Yoda food. That's pretty much it. And Yoda eats his food. well yeah yeah yoda eats luke food i just i still don't understand like how he gets so big eating food of that kind oh dude that's a good question if only you could rephrase it see now what if that character instead of like a tiny green model guy was actually like a big pink pig that had gotten marooned on the island but same voice i thought it was interesting that they imply is not
the right word what's stronger than imply um they they assert they basically say that um long john silver the man you know tim curry was like banging miss piggy in the which is kind of muppet version i didn't know that muppets could have intercourse with humans or necessarily with each other definitely seem to be able to do something i don't know oh kermy how you get so big eating food of this kind it's pretty good dude oh you know i mean he can't help it there also always has to be a mutiny where long john silver shows his true colors and kind of takes over the boat and the the good guys are forced to run away and that definitely happens in skeleton crew like several times what did you think of what did you think well the one i'm thinking of is the where they actually find the treasure map in the resort planet how did you feel about that episode and uh were there other instances of this that you thought i i liked that
episode i watched it with you i loved that episode that was like my favorite episode i should have click to the next episode button i can't believe because there was no next episode at that point and the next episode button showed up it showed up maybe we could have seen it beforehand but i wasn't thinking and i was like no i'm watching because it happened like way before the end of yeah like there was at the climax where he's still betraying them and the next episode button popped up and i was like i was just annoyed because i wasn't thinking i was just like no i want to why i don't know no get rid of that i was like what would it have done if only you'd clicked it we could have seen the lackluster next episode before it aired well you know i actually thought the one after that was interesting it was a little odd but i definitely want to talk about that but first so his betrayal of them uh when he when he says i i'm i'm the captain now
i'm the captain now is that how he talks this is he like an italian dude that's from captain phillips written by billy ray dude i don't think he said it with an italian accent either but i'm the captain now it's a me a captain oh anyway uh i thought so i liked that part and i thought it was great because when whim holds up that lightsaber my first thought was oh no don't pointed the wrong way no it's upside down it was upside down he's so lucky he didn't lose a toe or a foot or like you know his internal organs like depending on if he's holding it out like luke does you know you don't know what what um what jod is gonna do you know you're not thinking he's gonna become cartoonishly evil yeah the next episode it had fun parts but there were things about it that really felt forced in my opinion so there there are a lot of things that i like about this episode um but it diverges a little from the format of the others it's structured i
think in an actually very cool way every single episode they go to a new planet or biome and have an adventure there and i love that because it means every episode we get cool new aliens and the kids get interact with them and it's the perfect star wars show it really is like they go to Port Borgo. Then they go to the owl lady's planet. I couldn't stand that owl lady. And then they go to the hotel planet. And then the episode after, they don't go to a different planet, but suddenly they're just like in a trash biome. So one thing that I do think is good from a writing perspective, especially in a show, is when you split up characters and put characters who maybe weren't together with the other ones just to see how they interact. And we've never really seen kb and whim because kb is fern's friend and neil is whim's friend so they have a disagreement about where they're going to go fern wants to just climb straight up to the ship which it's like
80 stories high like it's like an actual skyscraper this is like the biggest cliff in the in the known universe this is like the movie fall yeah whoa dude which we covered by the way that was a good movie um but no i i i was just like mind blown that she was like hey we could just climb this and then we look at it and you gotta like crane your neck all the way back to see the top especially that she's like yeah this this pudgy elephant boy with no fingers can climb it he could climb it or like i guess with fingers that emit jizz i don't know i'm not sure if he is Or isn't that same species as Max Revo? He's not. He is not because technically Max Revo's species has no arms. He plays with his feet. The people who made Book of Boba Fett clearly didn't know that. No, and neither did the people who made Skeleton Crew because he was clearly supposed to be. He was clearly supposed to be, but they actually did say he's not.
So, he's not. So, yeah, I do think that KB in this episode says, no, I'm not climbing that. I'm going to stay with Wim. I think KB was justified in that decision. Yeah. But as it turns out, Fern was totally right, and they should have done what Fern said. Oh, yeah. Because Wim's idea is to follow the trash crabs. Follow the trash crabs that clearly just want to eat you. They say, help, help. So they must be trying to help us, right? I loved the reveal that these trash crabs just echo the last thing you said to try to get you to follow them. Yeah, they just say the last thing you say, and then they get you to follow them to their trash crab mama that eats you. I'm like, it makes sense that a few little kids that think the universe is a fun and adventurous place would be like, oh, the helpful trash crabs, they'll help us now. But no, they just want to eat you. And the most amazing thing about this show as a whole is just the sheer amount of practical effects in it.
Like, I mean, there is CG on top of the practical effects. But like Neil, the elephant kid is mostly practical effects. And he looks great. Big old elephant helmet. the wolf uh pirate captain is insane his head prosthetic is so and i they must have done this on purpose like they took one of the worst head prosthetics from the original trilogy that george lucas tried to remove because he thought it looked so bad and they spent way more time on it the world's greatest prosthetic any other mask star wars has ever done and like he has muscles in it he can open and close his mouth his eyes glow which he's so cool just david and his eyes don't glow defil's eyes do they do now yeah and the insane thing the trash crab mama is stop motion like she's she's matted like like she was like cg yeah no i thought she was cg too she moved so smoothly no she was entirely stopped i mean they probably use cg on top of her to like smooth
things out but like she's stop motion like you can see videos of them making it and it's crazy shout out to the art department i love the trash crabs even more now i already love them now they're even better now you had asked me who do you think kb is gonna choose she's gonna choose fern is she in love with fern or is she in love with uh wim i mean i don't know i mean so her her moms are lesbians so maybe she also likes girls i don't know but also i think she kind of already chose whim because she chose him and this is kind of a cute like it's kind of like a young coming of age movie and they have like a weird sex scene together yeah it won't fit and she's like push just force it in yeah i thought that was interesting it's something i don't know just to me it felt like is this supposed to be like an allegory for coming of age clear clearly because afterwards she's kind of like i bet you thought being a big hero would feel better than that you
know would be like cooler but it was just like something we did anyway sorry that's not what happens kb is a cyborg and she's she needs to replace one of the rods in her head and she helps him well it's it's a it's a fuse and i actually love this because as it was happening i was explaining it to my kids and i was like fuses are a real thing they're usually just copper and you know they would actually be like a little wire that's supposed to break but they took these extra wires and they took the copper out of them because wires have copper and then she made a mold in the sand that they could then molt in the copper and pour it into the mold she made the mold out of the old fuse so it'd be the right size they pulled it out of the sand they inserted it into her head she got a new fuse and i was like that's so cool like they they took star wars tech and they just supplied human real life tech onto it i was like that's fun now the only thing was when that kid
pulls the copper you know the new fuse out of the sand my kids were like wouldn't that burn his hands and i was like yes very much so he did not wait for it to cool down it was still molten he's just like but uh yeah other than that it was a cool scene well and another thing i liked about it was that up till now in star wars people who have cybernetic parts or mods as they were called in the book of Boba Fett. Honestly, it seems like it's kind of an upgrade. Better in every way. But like, it wouldn't be. It's a prosthetic. Like, it would be a problem, even if it maybe gives you extra hand strength. I don't know if Luke had extra hand strength, but like, I liked that KB is actually showing that, no, it wouldn't necessarily be great and there'd be a lot of maintenance and it kind of makes you not able to do all the things that like Fern can, like climb this giant tower. Luke's hand prosthetic is, like, top of the line.
He got, like, the Lamborghini of hand prosthetics. His hand prosthetic is so much better than KB's, like, head prosthetic. Like, his hand prosthetic has, like, two power cores inside of it. And he can, like, take one power core and, like, unravel the wires and, like, plug it into, like, a door. And it can just power the door. It's, like, so good. Well, I mean, that's why Boba Fett had to shoot it when he was on the skiff. he was like i gotta take that out that's too powerful it's too powerful we gotta get rid of it boba fett is so good he was focused on that because he knew that was the only thing that could beat him and that's why he was distracted by a blind man who gave him a black spot on his back it's all treasure planet everything dude you're right i think that the trash crabs episode was basically kb's time to shine i felt like she'd been kind of a nothing for most of the rest of
the series and you know her acting skills haven't really been rerouting well and it's not like she particularly did anything impressive in the trash crabs episode but like you said she showed a lot of character she showed that you know she is actually disabled and she's trying her best all the time and maybe that's why she's not as quick as them or as active as them or you know because fern doesn't realize that kb can't keep up all the time and it makes kb sad the actor for kb actually has some acting skills she was able to show them off from the start of the episode when she falls down and whacks her head she was acting like completely different from the other episodes and at first i was like why is she acting like this and then you know when she got it on with whim i was like oh it's because her brain is broken and she's literally dying like she's got no energy and she's not thinking straight and she just needs to fix someone's life that she thought
it would be more exciting or whatever it is she says i really wish i knew that line anyway here's a cool episode in that respect and i like the showcase kb a little bit i also have to say yes jod just betrayed them and in this episode they play it as a low point for these kids But in my opinion, that doesn't make any sense. This was literally the highest of the high points for them. Now they can get away from him. And oh, guess what? KB announces that she actually got the map and they can get back to Ad Atom. They have everything they've wanted for the entire series now. The instant they split up, the instant KB was like, fine, I'm going here with Wim. And Fern was like, OK, well, we're going to climb the cliff. My seven year old kid was like, Fern can't split up with them. Only KB knows the way back to Ad-Atten, which is literally what they've been trying to get the entire show. And now they have it.
If they split up, they can't get back. And I was like, yes, if my seven-year-old child understands that, the writers of this show should have gotten it. But sometimes when kids are mad and emotions are high, they don't necessarily think about all that. If KB was literally dying, she should have freaking said so instead of being like, I'm not going to tell you, Fern. I'm going to have a fight with you and split up. Like, that's not how you do self-preservation. She should have been like, ah, I'm dying. Get me a fuse. But KB is very quiet and she doesn't stand up to Fern. So I think that was kind of like she can't stand up to her, but she can sort of passive-aggressively show her, you know, her problems. Maybe. I don't know if I agree. But yeah, sure. Whatever. I did like that when the ship gets caught in the ship eater, the thing that eats ships, that they blow off the armor, which SM33 said to never do, though I'm not quite sure why, when they blow off the outer armor and then comes out with a shiny new ship.
And at first I was like, that's dumb. But then I thought about it. I was like, that's amazing. Yeah, because a pirate would need to change the ship. It was an old Republic ship. And as we know from the prequels, everything in the old Republic was shiny and new looking. It was all shiny. it's true and he had to dress it up like a really crappy ship that just looks awful because that's what ships look like now so and of course it doubled its armor so i thought that was that was pretty i i could accept it i thought it was fine it's not even a deus ex machina because it's actually like important because they introduced it earlier they said don't touch that well yeah that too they introduced earlier but also it's like important like we did need an explanation for why this ship can get on at and nothing else can so but that was sorry that was another thing because along with my praising the practical effects at first i was like i think they spent
a lot of money on the practical effects they do have and didn't have any money for like at aton because like their their cg droids and kind of the cg world just doesn't look great uh but then i thought about it and i was like wait no this is perfect because it's an old republic world old republic yeah and old republic was cg that looks bad cg yes no it fit it totally fit and especially the droids were like bad cg which is exactly what those droids were some of the droids actually were practical so i don't want to sell them yeah but they looked like they look like bad figures right when they were real so another very important thing that happens in every treasure island adaptation that i have personally seen is they find a crazy person marooned on treasure island and this is another thing that i didn't really see in skeleton crew but i was wondering if you have something that could maybe fit the bill here i do think that sm33 is the one who
fits the bill here and there are several reasons for for why he's actually the one who really fits he is definitely crazy one of the best scenes in this show is when they go to at akron and they make him he's been telling them he can't say that he ever heard of no ad at tells him that so many times and they make him say it and then it activates his tear them limb from limb rip them it's a great protocol i love the way it's shot like the the the horror camera that they do on him it's amazing the dutch angle and everything it's so good but really good he is clearly insane and he's also the one who knows about at aton which is kind of the whole thing that like ben gunn who's the crazy person on the island is he's the one who knows where the treasure actually is And most importantly, he was literally marooned on at Aten. He was stuck in that ship all alone for who knows how long after his captain died.
Right. And this is where I feel like it is like directly not just like taking from Treasure Island, but from Treasure Planet. And maybe, like I said, it's possible that when you take Treasure Island and make it into a sci-fi, you just automatically turn Ben Gunn into a robot. But I don't know. I feel like these guys had to have loved Treasure Planet because Ben is the bioelectric navigator that they find. He's a crazy robot who has literally lost his mind because his brain, he's missing part of his head. Captain Flint pulled it out of him. Right. And Captain Flint pulled it out of him so that he couldn't tell anyone about something. In this case, the booby trap in the centroid of the mechanism, which is exactly what Tack Renaud did to SM33. He blocked off part of his memory so that he couldn't tell people something. And he also put a booby trap in there that he's going to kill anyone. Or he's going to kill you.
Clearly, the people who worked on this loved Treasure Planet. Why wouldn't they? It's like an amazing movie. I don't understand how It and Atlantis bombed because they were just amazing. And apparently they were seen as failures. so people will say that no no no it's not like based on treasure island it's so because it's different it's just taking little yeah that's exactly how they'll say it too so they're like it's just doing easter eggs from all pirate movies because sm33 is me oh that's a reference to peter pan there's also references to like pirates of the caribbean with the key that they have to get when they're on port borgo but i gotta say no no no those are just the peter pan reference the pirates of the caribbean reference those are just red herrings meant to throw us off they put those in so that we would be like that like oh no it's just lots of references to lots of things but no i'm saying no this is treasure island and you know
how i know because in the very i think it's the very next episode after jod is captured by brutus Brutus says so we're gonna go to this treasure planet he actually says treasure planet like there's no way that that is a coincidence these people who already put in SM33 was just like Ben from Treasure Planet they say the phrase treasure planet like they know what they're doing every Treasure Island adaptation has a scene where the pirates turn on Long John Silver but he talks his way out of it using only his words and not only convinces them not to kill him but also regains control of the pirates that scene that you're describing was that it was a jod's you know long john silver triumph moment where he you know keeps the pirates under his thumb um despite having you know all of the odds against him and essentially you know there's no reason they should continue to listen to him or follow him but with just his words he he convinces them yeah he also does regain control of the pirates
by uh killing uh brutus which was too bad because brutus was great and i wanted to see more of him and he never did anything i want to talk about this brutus i think was a better captain than long-jawed silvo clearly the pirates were more like they were flourishing under him they are like the leaders of port borgo like he's keeping people in jail there and people are just doing whatever he says no one does what silvo says no one cares about him he's an idiot everywhere he goes there's a bounty hunter trying to get him or or some random person saying don't trust that guy brutus follows the rules he has an actual trial to sentence jod to death right and he only took over because jod failed to provide them with their promised payment like he didn't take over as a mutiny and then and then jod turns that back around him by not following the rules and just freaking shooting him in the head when he's helpless i was like god you bastard what's wrong
with you and like brutus spared you he says he's going to kill jod the first chance he gets but he clearly doesn't mean that he has had every chance to kill jod he had him in jail he could have killed him or earlier right like if he's not gonna kill jod John felled at everything he did. He screwed over everyone. He claims the crew loves him, though we see no evidence of that. Like, maybe one lady is sort of on his side. Yeah, one lady kind of liked him, but other than that, no one. The cyborg on his crew, he mocks for his missing eye. And he executes Brutus without a trial, while Brutus is incapable of defending himself. I know. Like, case closed. This is also where I was just like, I can't stand this Jod guy. Because also I love Brutus. That was an amazing prosthetic, like I already said. And they are building up Brutus so much. You are expecting him to do something insane. Like he's going to be a formidable bad guy.
And to just off him like that is just so annoying. But I will say it is in keeping with Star Wars tradition to create a very cool bad guy who you kill in the dumbest way possible. Just kill him. just like throw him in the sarlacc pit blind guy smacks or just like put captain phasma in the trash compactor yeah or just like or just chop maul in half you know just yeah he doesn't even sitting on the throne talking about how yes now you're going to join me he turns the lightsaber in his hands that was really good though that was awesome i have a theory that the prosthetic for Brutus was too expensive and very difficult to operate probably required like five operators and I think they realized they couldn't have him be the bad guy at some point they were like we okay we can't do much because if you notice he's not in very many scenes he shows up and has like seconds of screen time that alone makes him like the Darth Vader of this show right like he shows
up he's super menacing and then like then he's gone for episodes on end and we're like whoa where's that brutus guy i think it's i think it's sort of like a uh a situation of like the jaws show the shark less and it made the shark scarier like i think they realized we have to show brutus less because this prosthetic we made is a monster unto itself like it's too expensive for us to operate and we can't have him be the main bad guy them killing him in this way and having jod do it um is also very treasure island because in treasure island there's always a first mate who is very bloodthirsty well at first mate to john silver i guess i should say who is very bloodthirsty wants to kill all the good guys all the time uh long john silver is constantly telling him no hang on right we're gonna do this my way and then that first mate always tries to turn on long john silver and in the end long john silver always shoots that guy uh after they you know try
and dig up the treasure and it's not there now that actually leads into my next hallmark of a treasure island story which is at some point they always get to the treasure but the treasure is already gone and then they turn on each other did that happen in skeleton crew they go to the planet and it's just like a green miasma and they're like yeah they send ships down there and they get blown up the storm they're just like you lied to us again captain silvo one way that again as i've said i think it's totally obviously based on treasure island but even more based on treasure planet and i think another evidence for that is the character of scroop in treasure planet scroop is the sort of you know second in command guy who's bloodthirsty and wants to kill everyone and he's so cool what a cool spider psycho i would love to get my picture taken with him at disneyland And as I was in a random SNL sketch about John Smith,
they say people are just queuing up for a picture with Scroop from Treasure Planet. And no one wants a picture with John Smith.
But I love Scroop. He's so cool. He is the Brutus of Treasure Planet. And like Brutus, he is a cool bad guy who dies in the dumbest way possible. It bothered me so much when I watched Treasure Planet. Every time I watch Treasure Planet, because, I mean, obviously I love Scrooge, so it's going to bother me no matter what. But like, if he died in this cool like fight scene, I'm fine with that. Like, obviously he's going to die. He's a bad guy. But like, how he dies just doesn't make any sense. Like, they're close enough to the planet. They're anchored. They would have real gravity. And I know the rules in this universe don't make any sense because there's air in space, but they turn off gravity which does not make you just float straight up but in Treasure Planet it does apparently Ben turned on reverse gravity that just makes you go up I think that when he got away from the ship far enough he would just fall back
down to the planet or when they turn the gravity back on like a minute later it's honestly like seconds later he would just fall back down to the ship and he would probably still die anyway I just don't like the way he's like and just flies off into like nothingness just like he's gone bye like team rocket blasting off yeah but anyway he gets a better death than brutus did i'll say that yeah brutus just like lay in there with his prosthetic head barely like can't move because he like just can't do anything like i don't think that person could do anything i know i think so too my final hallmark of a treasure island story that i was able to identify which is at the end of the story the the the evil captain long john silver always decides to help the good guys and then they're gonna take him and turn him in but he gets away in the end i kind of felt like this was a major deviation for uh the skeleton crew yes jod na na wood turns completely insane megalomaniacal cartoon psychotic
and does not help them and never would and he's totally evil and he doesn't seem to get away in the end yeah so this is a departure I agree I think it relates back to the Brutus thing because usually when Silver has to do something good near the end he's saving Jim from like the evil pirates the first mate yeah I think that Brutus was planned to do something bigger here and they just didn't do it and so Jod had to be the bad guy and that's why he's just cartoonishly bad as though he was some kind of red-eyed wolf man I know no seriously like I could picture Brutus doing the things that Jod's doing in the last episode better than I could picture Jod doing it because he's so evil he seems like a crazy evil eye glowing wolf man in that episode yeah so he gets down to the treasure planet makes his way to the mint and he has all the money and for whatever reasons in it he lets it he thinks fern is gonna tell her mom that he's
actually a pirate so he brings fern and fern's mom with him and sends all the other kids home because they're not i guess because if he has fern he thinks they won't tell anyone because he would kill he also assigns droids to like watch them so they won't say anything he should not have brought fern if he just hadn't involved the kids at all i think he could have done what he wanted and just gotten away with it now he goes and talks to the ruler of uh of this town of presumably of ad ad and i don't know and it turns out that it's actually just a computer and it turns out you can kill that computer just by like putting a lightsaber in its camera that's my main issue with this last episode is just how awful the security is at this play this is the mint this is like fort knox you know yeah and they sure have great planetary like defense systems seems like they would have other so many things wrong with this first of all i actually liked the build
up to the scene i was well i mean i was mad about jod being so ridiculously evil but then when he gets to that giant computer and it's actually really smart and it's like oh you're a jedi how is that possible like and then it grows a bunch of crazy arms i'm like okay obviously i know jod is going to win but at least we'll have a good fight here right no we won't have a good he just lightsaber stabs it in the eye and i i i hate hate the way lightsabers are just like so overpowered in in modern star wars because like i i think i already mentioned this in a previous episode but like in the phantom menace when qui-gon doesn't get through the blast door minutes to cut through that blaster and they didn't even make it yes yes that's important because it shows lightsabers can't just do anything yeah right and yet in all the clone wars shows everything to follow is just like slice through the wall there don't need doors
don't need keys you know it just bothers me so much but anyway presumably a lightsaber i mean i know it's kyber crystals and those are so magically powerful but like blasters shoot like plasma bolts that would presumably be about as hot and destructive as a lightsaber. And no one in the history of the world has ever been like, oh, that guy has a gun. Glad I have my sword. I'm going to win. You know, this is what's happening here. They have swords. Everyone else has guns. And yet somehow swords are better. Well, I mean, that's on par for Jedis. But Jad is not a Jedi. He shouldn't know how to deflect blaster bolts. Yeah, that's true. That would take some training. That's not something you just know how to do. That would take like two minutes of training on the Millennium Falcon. At least a couple of minutes on the Millennium Falcon with some guy telling you to just use the Force. And mostly what you just need to do is wear a blast helmet with the shield down.
Yeah, that's the main thing. So I liked the idea that he wasn't actually a Jedi, that he was just using tricks to make it look like he was a Jedi. Because they're Force-sensitive people. He's an actual Jedi. He is completely 100% a Jedi. He can force pull, he can force push, he can deflect. No, I liked it much better when it's just like he can occasionally move things, but he's not like, he's not crazy. He's just force sensitive. Why does stabbing the Overseer in the eye make him shut down? Like his eye would presumably be how he sees. It's not his brain. He's huge. What is the rest of that robot for? Just sitting there looking good. Stabbing him in the eye not only shuts him down, but literally shuts the entire planet down. Not just the droids, but the power grid. Yeah, I know. Shuts down their speeders. So he shuts down, you know, all the power. He kills the Overseer and then he takes over
and he brings his pirates in to lay siege to the planet. Jod is a pirate. He's not a planet conqueror. What the crap? As soon as Jod went on the intercom and announced to the people, He's like, I am now the ruler of Atatan. You will work for me and you'll make your credits for me. My kids spoke up, but Jod only took over this one city. He doesn't rule all of the cities. It's a whole planet. And I was like, yes, you can't just conquer a planet with one ship and a tiny crew of pirates. It's a planet. This is Atatan's treasure planet. Even if the overseer, killing that overseer to shut down the whole planet, there are still people. his plan is awful because look like just do what tack renaud did tack renaud was just coming to this planet getting money and leaving leave conquering it ruins the plan the fact that you can come and be everyone believes that you're the dude who just comes and takes the money
like why not just take the money like you could just keep coming back you're killing the golden goose here why that's when i'm like he didn't all he had to do is load up his ship and leave and say all right kids i got you home thanks so much love you guys thanks i know it's like like i said it's like they were expecting brutus to be here or some other bad guy and they needed a big climax in the good plan and come up with this evil tyrant plan and then you know jod could help them beat brutus or something yeah well and that's even what he says on the intercom he's like i'm not trying to do anything here guys i just want you to continue doing everything you were already doing why are you announcing yourself they would have done what they were doing if you hadn't been a complete jackass about this now maybe he thought like they do seem to think that he does need to go see the overseer before he takes money and there are screws in his ship
so like but you know kids managed all he had to say was all right we're loaded up you know undo the screws that's all he had to say right i mean if they had had a droid say no you have to see the overseer first then it might make sense that would have made me happier than him being like now let's go see the overseer one thing i like about this planet is you kind of like they keep talking about the mysterious overseer and the great work and everything about it just reeks of like dystopia you know, like some dystopian YA novel, like Hunger Games. This is just a utopia. Like everything actually works. And being cut off from the rest of the galaxy, like... It was only a good thing. Who cares? It doesn't matter. They're prospering. They're happy. Our Earth that we live on is cut off. Like we don't know any other planets and our Earth is somewhat working, right? Like I'm just saying like being cut off doesn't matter for imports and exports if you have a whole planet.
so first of all my kids were literally saying as you know jod was taking over the planet my kids were like they should call the owl lady she told them to call her and i was like oh yeah i guess they should and then they did i was like that's what did my kids figure that out it was accurate i didn't even think to call her i would be like screw that owley how care she was so useless when it was ending they called her and then i thought that it was like the stupidest ending ever as far as star wars goes when like these x-wing like literal cops come in and save the day in this deus x-wing machina moment wow deus x-wing machina they win too easily as well and i i mean look it's fine like you know it's kind of fan service like oh x-wings and b-wings it's kind of cool i guess i really don't want to sound too down on it because i love this show and i even liked the end like it was fun it's i'm just i'm complaining for complaining's sake i'm nitpicking
i also didn't like i was annoyed with the part where kb is flying the ship and jod is like you've sent her to her death as she's flying down and then she like flies out of sight and there's no explosion and she's clearly okay and they're like no and jod's like i told you yeah i kind of felt like maybe they were going to have her crash and die but then they decided not to well i don't know i just think something could have exploded right like she anything so that it makes sense like because she's just slowly crashing and we know that like ships even though they explode very easily on impact with things they're very good at crash landings in star wars like they just don't yeah like people are always fine i don't know what is in them to stop people from dying but i don't know nothing about that seemed like kb is dead and yet they acted like it was no i mean i think i've summed up the hallmarks of what makes a treasure island story
i think skeleton crew may not hit all of them 100 but it definitely hits almost all of them i mean and even the ones that it doesn't hit it's still got elements of the story that match them so in my mind it's pretty cut and dry skeleton crew definitely hold inspiration from treasure island right and treasure planet very more importantly treasure planet and i'd like to talk a little bit about some of the inspiration that i think it clearly pulled so skeleton crew starts with one of the early i don't even might be the first scene but whatever one of the early scenes is whim reading a hologram book well on his data pad like jim how does treasure planet start wim jim oh my gosh that's why they named him wim oh my gosh he is jim oh goodness we don't know his last name he's like wim walkins i don't know wow wim walkins that's amazing oh man he's he talks in like woo language he's like where's the treasure long john silver
no that's i can't believe i didn't catch on to that he's clearly jim yeah the whole show i was wondering why would they name him wim is it because it sounds like wimp but no that's the only reason they would name him that right because it's jim well yeah because it's just easy it's like john jod silver silvo yeah wim jim yeah i mean oh man yeah this is great evidence we should have put that at like the beginning yeah oh good gosh yeah you should have said that when i said hey there has to be a kid named jim yeah there's a kid named wim so oh man jim reads a hologram book at the beginning of treasure planet and wim does too i mean it's like a data pad and it kind of moves over oh dude so that reminds me so at the very end of skeleton crew it shows everything that happened and then it's yeah in a book on wim's data pad and my kids were like so the whole show was just a story story yeah and i was like well that kind of ruins it a little doesn't it
perhaps at the very end when it seems like maybe the whole show was a story on his book that's a reference to how jim hawkins is telling the story in the book treasure island like he's recounting it as though it happened a while ago maybe whim wrote this story you know on his data pad i don't possibly so for anyone who does not know if you got disney plus you go into skeleton crew you go into the bonus section there is like an entire music video that they made for this tv show you can just search boonky dunco on youtube uh because they released it as an official lyric video and like it's good well they took uh peter shilling's uh major tom yeah 1983 and they just they just replaced all the words with garbledygook with fake words. They say it's Huttese, but they just made up random words. All the words with nonsense. It's Huttese. Yes. It's about It's so good. Bunkidunko means home. Yes.
It is the definitive version of Major Tom. I will never listen to Major Tom again. I'm only listening to Bunkidunko now. I don't think I ever listened to it. to begin with, but I certainly like it now. The last theory I have is something I think originated from you. And all I have written down is the note add, add in, which is subliminal messaging. We're talking about Disney's new corporate strategy. The subliminal messaging they snuck into Skeleton Crew with the words add, add in, is that with all streaming services, they're now trying to add ads in. They're adding ads in. add add in that's their new corporate strategy is supposed to make us feel okay with that because everybody wants to get to add add in yeah add in it's treasure planet you got to go there well i mean doesn't it make sense add add in you get money right yeah add in get money to me it makes perfect it's not only subliminal messaging it's like
subliminally telling us their plan it's like meta exactly it's like mk ultra so that's like a full-blown conspiracy theory well what do you think do you think that skeleton crew was based on treasure island and treasure planet most definitely yes i mean completely 100 i think it's proof enough just looking at the names of the character Wim is Jim. John Silver, Wim Jim. Thank you so much for listening. The music for this episode was provided by Torvald. Yeah, dude, check out our ending theme song. Please rate, review, and subscribe. In a world of shadows and dreams, nothing is quite what it seems. We're the fools in a midnight reel, the popcorn isn't real.
Chasing clues through the silver screen Wishing for a tale that's unseen Hold my hand through this hazy spiel The popcorn isn't real Behind the curtain, there's nothing to feel The popcorn isn't real Caught in a moment that will never heal The popcorn isn't real
We craft a fiction within fiction's mind Searching for secrets we'll never find Every clue, just a future we steal The popcorn isn't real We whisper theories, but they all fade A fleeting ghost in a midnight parade Holding on to that surreal appeal The popcorn isn't real Behind the curtain, there's nothing to feel The popcorn isn't real Caught in a moment that will never heal The popcorn isn't real
We'll see you next time.
